BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics X5 Concept

BMW Vision
It may look like a standard X5 from the outside, but the Vision Efficient Dynamics concept previews BMW's mild hybrid plans as well as a new high-performance diesel and eight-speed transmission. At the heart of this concept is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine. It uses two variable turbos and common rail injection to churn out a healthy 295 lb-ft of torque. What's more, the engine produces an astounding 204 hp - BMW claims it's the first diesel to generate over 100 hp per liter of engine displacement. The engine consumes fuel at a rate of 36 mpg.

The diesel engine is just part of the efficiency equation, however. An electric generator is housed in the transmission and can contribute 15 kW of power and up to 155 lb-ft of torque. When added to the engine output, the hybrid system peaks at 221 hp. Generated electricity is stored in a lithium-ion battery that's mounted in the luggage compartment. The vehicle can recover energy with regenerative braking and store additional "free" energy from the sun via a roof-mounted solar panel. Accessories like power steering, the air conditioning compressor, and engine coolant pump run on a 120-volt system that takes advantage of stored power and frees the engine up to move the X5 down the road (with a 0-to-62-mph time of 8.9 seconds).

Those ideas may foretell what's in BMW's hybrid future, but the concept's new gearbox is production-ready. An eight-speed automatic transmission was co-developed with ZF and goes along with the EfficientDynamics theme. The extra gears give a wide range of ratios while an electronic gear-finder makes skipping the unnecessary ones possible. Locking the transmission to the engine - accomplished by a clutch that engages once the vehicle is moving -reduces driveline losses.

While the concept shows what's possible (albeit hidden under a normal-looking X5), BMW warns that such improvements in efficiency "can only be achieved by means of an exponential increase in effort and expense." Translation: prepare to pay a premium if you want to save the earth in BMW style.

FRANKFURT 2009, BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept

BMW Vision
Before Frankfurt be its doors, BMW present all the images and details of his spectacular new prototype, called Vision EfficientDynamics Concept , a prototype that in addition to presenting a design really striking and end, presents a spectacular engine that surely in a very short while we will see production models (hopefully).

The Vision EfficientDynamics has a plug-in hybrid system with an engine and two electric, whose batteries can be recharged from a plug to get performance comparable to that of a M3 and a average consumption of 3.76 litres/100 km combined cycle that would harmonize.

The internal combustion engine is 1.5 liter 163 horsepower and 290 Nm in association with a gearshift DCT, derived from M3 and Z4 , which along with two electric motors achieve 356 hp and a torque of 800 Nm at peak performance.

The first electric drift of ActiveHybrid 7 , which provides 25 kW continuous (upgradeable to 38) from its position between the central span and the gearbox. The maximum force developed is 290 Nm. And the second electric motor is in the front, this has been designed for maximum sportsmanship, developing 60 kW and up to 220 Nm. This makes the 0 to 100 km / h in 4.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km / h.

And this is achieved through batteries Lithium Polymer , these have a usable capacity of 8.6 kWh on a total of 10.8 kWh, and can be recharged in 2.5 hours from a simple socket 220 V/16 A. The load is performed using a conventional 220 volt outlet or an outlet of 380 volts three phase. Recharge time varies between 44 minutes and two hours. But the most surprising is that it also works 100% with its electric motors. Impressive !!!

Its structure has been made with lightweight materials. Aluminum for the chassis and suspension, body panels and polycarbonate windows. This achieves a weight of 1,395 kg. It measures 4.60 meters long, 1.90 meters wide and 1.24 meters high. As we appreciate design BMW was the end, marking new lines everywhere, and thus showing the lines will have their future models (where aunquesa be directed).

The front is really aggressive, its optical, grill, air intake, the engine is at the center of the hood, and the lines surrounding the whole car really scared. On the side is a line that reminds me of the prototype Dacia , the Duster , but of course, completely carried to an extreme, where we found the door with an opening gullwing and the optical back.

And in the back, we see what is more aggressive than this model, where the optics of LEDs, the blue, the air outlet, the body that protrudes from the same, the graph of the name, everything, they do look as something that is not of this planet. Before long we shall live and direct. BMW's spiky supercar

BMW Spiky Concept
A design student from Germany has created her own, spiky take on BMW’sfuture, the Lovos. Anne Forschner, studying at Pforzheim University in Bretten, Germany, designed the Lovos to challenge the way we design, build and consume cars and other products.

Forschner built the majority of the car with 260 identical pieces of metal - the logic behind it being that build and design costs and times are much lower than usual when one component is repeated many times.

The Photovoltaic cells on the car aren't just for show either, they can be used for a number of purposes. To power the car using the sun’s energy, as a pointy design cue or as air brakes.

BMW Lovos Design Study Has us Wondering About Art, Design...

BMW Lovos
Maybe it's just me, but I can't seem to understand what most modern artists and designers believe that they achieve by being different just for the sake of being different. True, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I wonder how many of you wouldn't agree with me when I say that for example, the Winged Victory of Samothrace or if you prefer something car related, Pininfarina's 1940's Cisitalia 202, are timelessly beautiful and will always remain fresh and unique?

As for the concept that ignited our thoughts, the fish-scale-armadillo-like BMW Lovos concept with Swarovski earrings for lights, which was crafted by Anne Forschner, a 24 year old designer from Germany's Pforzheim University, what can we say; the photos speak for themselves.

And if you're still not baffled, well, just go ahead and read the designer's description of the project. That will do the trick for sure...

BMW Lovos – "Lifestyle Of Voluntary Simplicity"

Textual description of the project

Lovos (Lifestyle of Voluntary Simplicity) is based on a philosophical idea, which asks critical questions about the design, construction and use of road vehicles, as we know them today. The world we live in is increasingly complex and we move within multifaceted social structures, hardly noticing that we perhaps lack an overview over how products and services influence and overwhelm us. We rarely question these structures and continue to live and consume habitually. The car represents this world in the form of a physical object.

BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics
Now BMW is bringing out a vehicle that looks to be about perfect for wealthy green-conscious U.S. buyers - a hybrid diesel version of its X5 luxury SUV. The concept, which the Munich automaker has given the awkward name Vision EfficientDynamics, is going to be shown to the press at the Geneva show and is officially a “concept study,” though it doesn’t take much reading between the lines to see that this is a vehicle that’s likely headed for production in some form.

The Vision EfficientDynamics combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engine with a mild-hybrid (so-called ActiveHybrid - which the automaker previewed on an X6 at Frankfurt last fall) system, along with some technology that’s ready for production and other technology that was specifically developed for the concept - the latter a likely reference to the “package appropriate” lithium-ion battery that’s mounted at the cargo floor.Another special technology feature in the concept that might not make it to production is a functional solar roof - similar to that recently shown by Fisker in its Karma prototype.

The roof employs a square meter of high-power solar cells to capture up to one kilowatt-hour, enabling pre-heating of the transmission oil and potentially powering a cooling box, audio equipment, or phone charger without drawing from the battery. The concept rides on low-drag 19-inch light-alloy wheels.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept, the engine itself, which has third-generation common-rail injection technology, makes a noteworthy 204 bhp and 300 lb-ft of torque - and is the first diesel in the world with a specific power output of over 100 bhp per liter, says BMW. The hybrid system’s electric motor system can pitch in up to 155 lb-ft of torque, and the powertrain makes 224 horsepower altogether. The system’s ‘hybrid module’ is the result of joint development between BMW and Daimler, and the hybrid components are fully integrated into the casing of the transmission, a new eight-speed automatic transmission developed jointly with ZF and, BMW says, “presented here for the first time and ready for serial production use.”

Torque is delivered to all four wheels via BMW’s fully variable xDrive system. An Auto Start/Stop Function, similar to what BMW is already offering on some of its European-market vehicles, helps improve fuel efficiency by completely shutting off the engine at stoplights or in idling traffic and restarting it quickly when needed. BMWsays that the X5 hybrid’s comfort and versatility are comparable to the standard X5, but with the fuel consumption and emissions of the compact class. The automaker cites a decent 0-62-mph time of 8.9 seconds, and in the EU test cycle, the concept returns an impressive 36 miles per gallon - a huge leap ahead of the 19 city, 25 highway estimates expected for the X5 xDrive35d expected later this year.

The concept would emit an impressively low and likely 50-state-friendly 172 grams of CO2 per kilometer (277 grams per mile).BMW’s release has a few confusing elements, one of them being a statement that the design study “…clearly shows that any additional increase in efficiency over and above the highly efficient BMW vehicles already available today can only be achieved by means of an exponential increase in effort and expense.”

BMW X1 scooped
You've seen the concept car... now feast your eyes on the best spy shots yet of the production ready machine!

Described as an SAV, BMW's new X1 hits showrooms in Autumn, and is actually based on the same chassis that underpins the BMW 3-Series. Despite being the smallest 4x4 in BMW’s stable, the five-seat model isn’t much smaller than the X3 – and is 108mm shorter than the X3.

Like that model, all X1s will come with BMW's xDrive four-wheel drive system, and petrol power will start with a 170bhp 2.0-litre unit called the xDrive20i. Flagship cars top out with a six-cylinder xDrive30i developing 272bhp.

The diminutive 4x4 crossover will also get diesel power, most likely starting with the 2.0-litre, 143bhp engine found in the 118d and including BMW’s planet-saving efficient dynamics programme. xDrive20d and xDrive 23d variants will also appear.

Prices will start at around £20,000 for the 2.0-litre version, rising up to £30,000 for a range-topping xDrive30i. A hot X1 tii is rumoured to be in the pipeline, too.

2010 BMW X1 Review

2010 BMW X1
After toying with the idea of an even larger X7 sport-utility vehicle to complement the midsize X5 SUV, BMWhas decided to go smaller instead. The 2011 BMW X1 is an all-new compact-utility vehicle built on the same platform as the recently introduced 1 Series coupe. Caught testing on the streets of Munich, the X1 has a tall-roof design similar to the 2010 BMW V5 utility vehicle.
inline-6 engine.

The idea for both vehicles is to cram as much interior space as possible into a relatively small footprint. Like the 1 Series coupe, the 2011 BMW X1 will likely offer two variations of BMW's 3.0-liter

Expect base X1s to have roughly 230 horsepower, while the top-of-the-line models will get the same 300-hp 3.0-liter inline-6 found in the 135i and 335i coupes and sedans. Since it's supposed to have more utility than your average sedan, the X1 will most likely come standard with all-wheel drive. The system will also feature BMW's new Dynamic Performance Control system, which should help make the X1 handle better than your average sport-utility. It will be awhile before we know for sure, as the 2011 BMW X1 is still several years away from production. Expect to see its official debut sometime in 2010, with sales beginning in the U.S. a year later.
