Gordon Murray is set to launch an all-new small model that will cost only £5,000, but offer the same desirability as Fiat's fresh 500 and the MINI. It's due on sale in two years, aimed at first-time buyers and customers keen to drive an eco-friendly but 'cool' car. Made from lightweight materials, the tiny MPV-style machine should weigh only 500kg, and is to get a frugal petrol engine that can run on biofuels.

As well as a low price, the model will promise other financial incentives, including tax breaks and potential free city centre parking. Running costs are estimated to be a quarter of those for a typical Ford Focus-sized family car.

The new company, Gordon Murray Design Limited, will produce the newcomer - codenamed T.25 - in small numbers, and aims to sell or license the concept to a major manufacturer.

As well as the T.25, Murray's firm is to build a new supercar. As with the McLaren F1, lightweight construction will be at its core, but it's set to be eco-friendly and cost a fraction of the F1's price. It should arrive in 2010.
